What is PatternFile?
PatternFile is easy to use sewing pattern organization software.
Ok, but what makes it different from other software on the market (or can’t I just use a spreadsheet)?
- Pictures First
PatternFile’s main collection view prioritizes the pattern envelope picture or your own photographs of the pattern. People aren’t robots and numbers don’t mean a lot to us. Boring names like “Misses’ Dress with Belt and Sleeves” don’t do much more to trigger our memories. With pictures in front of you it is much easier to know exactly what the pattern is and remember what you got it for.
You can attach your own tags to each pattern to help you remember them or search for them later. If you are a parent who makes clothes for your children you can tag each pattern with the name of the child you made the garment for. If you are theater costumer you can tag a pattern with the title of the play and the character’s name.
- Find What You Want, Fast!
You can search your patterns by name, number, manufacturer, storage location or by your own custome tags. You don’t have to worry about complicated search forms or long load times. The simple and easy search bar will search all these fields instantly, getting you to the patterns you want with the minimum amount of clicking and typing.
- Add a whole box of patterns in one sitting.
Getting all of your patterns entered into a system like this can be an intimidating task, but PatternFile does everything it can to make it easy. With auto-fill, all you have to do is enter the pattern number and for many popular patterns the details will fill in automatically including pictures, descriptions, yardage text and line art. We already have the in-print patterns for all of the largest manufacturers and we are working hard to add new manufacturers to the system. We also have over 5000 vintage and retro patterns from the largest manufacturers available for auto-fill. This feature is included for PatternFile subscribers.
- Share with friends.
PatternFile lets you connect with your friends and family. You can add friends to you account and then view and discuss their pattern collection. You can email them questions about their patterns right inside patternfile, and soon we will let you have conversations and discussions right inside the application. This feature is included for PatternFile subscribers.
- Your data is safe
It can take a long time to get your pattern collection entered and set up exactly how you like it, even with auto-fill. The last thing you need is to have your computer crash and take all of your precious data with it. With the PatternFile subscription service your collection will be backed up to our servers. Just download and install PatternFile on your new computer and enter your registration information. Your whole collection will be downloaded to your next computer and you’ll be ready to go. You can also use this feature to see your collection on multiple computers. You can edit your pattern collection on your desktop computer and it will be automatically updated the next time you access your account on your laptop.
- Growing and Getting Better all of the time.
PatternFile is our one and only product. We don’t intend to let it fall behind and become outdated or unavailable. We’re planning a lot of new features, including project management and sharing, Facebook and Twitter integration, mobile phone applications and more. We want PatternFile to be everything that sewing enthusiasts want it to be so we will grow and change as we implement user requests.
What will the mobile phone application include?
Before releasing the mobile application we plan to add a ‘Wishlist’ feature to PatternFile. You’ll be able to add your friend’s patterns to your wishlist, or add new patterns by pattern number. When you are at the fabric store, you’ll be able to use the mobile phone application to view and search your wishlist. When there are pattern sales you’ll be able to quickly see which patterns from the discounted manufacturer are on your list.
You’ll also be able to view and search your own collection. Check to see if you already own a pattern in the right size before you buy a new one and view yardage details to help you make the right fabric and notion purchases.
Right now we are planning to release apps for iPhone and Android phones but may consider making apps for other smart phones if there is enough demand.
What will the project tracking feature include?
You’ll be able to add patterns, fabric and notions together to create a project. Then post updates and progress photos to your social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. We also plan to include hour tracking and more refined features for users who do commissioned projects.
Why is there a subscription fee?
All of the subscription features give you access to our servers. The subscription fee helps us to keep those servers up and running without advertisements. The subscription feature also helps us to ensure that we can keep time-sensitve features like auto-fill up to date. We always update our database when manufacturers release new patterns and try to have the newest patterns available before seasonal pattern sales come around. Finally, the subscription feature allows us to ensure our customers that PatternFile will continue to grow and get better and that they will never have to worry about it being incompatible with a new computer purchase.
Who is Vespertine Software, LLC?
Vespertine Software, LLC was formed in 2010 by Morgan Buck to publish and distribute PatternFile and any future software development projects.
What is the meaning behind the company name?
Morgan Buck has used the word vespertine as an online handle and as a business name for years. Morgan’s software consulting company prior to forming Vespertine Software, LLC was called Vespertine Enterprises. The word vespertine is used in botany and zoology to label behaviors that happen late at night, like night blooming flowers and creating software is an endeavor that often involves lots of late nights (and caffeine consumption).
Who is Morgan Buck?
Morgan is the owner of Vespertine Software, LLC and the lead developer of PatternFile 1.0. She’s developed mobile phone interfaces and databases for Fortune 500 companies but left that and founded Vespertine Software, LLC to build software that she could be passionate about. Morgan is a self-proclaimed geek and her hobbies include costume, live action role playing, guitar and Kung Fu.
Who is Liz Jamieson?
Liz runs the blog, Twitter, Facebook and other social networking for PatternFile. She is a hobby seamstress who mostly makes costumes for theater and LARPS. She enjoys mixing and matching patterns to create just the right piece and her oversized pattern collection was the original inspiration for PatternFile.
What was the inspiration for creating PatternFile?
PatternFile started its life as a personal project. Morgan’s roomate, Liz, is a costumer and seamstress with a large pattern collection. One afternoon, Liz was organizing her massive pattern collection and complained that once she put her patterns into a box and labeled it, she still had to dig through each box or do online research to find the patterns she wanted. Pattern numbers on the front of the box just didn’t cut it for helping her understand what patterns she actually had. She asked Morgan to just make some simple software that would help her to see her collection and make sense of it. As the project began, other costumers and seamstresses started to take notice and expressed interest in getting a copy for themselves. We soon realized that we had something that many people needed and just was not available.
